A cache of internal Microsoft materials leaked on the BetaWiki forum points to an experimental system codenamed Project Aion. Windows Latest went through the documents on August 24: an internal SharePoint site named CopilotOS, several demo recordings, and team documentation pages labeled The Pillars, AI Devices, Self Driving OS, and Key Tech. News pages visible in the recordings date to 2024, matching the development year noted in the documents.
Aion isn’t a reskin of Windows. It runs on a lightweight kernel called Win3, lighter than Windows 11, with faster boot times and lower power draw — at the cost of dropping Win32 apps entirely. The whole interface lives inside a customized version of Edge: no Start menu, no taskbar, no desktop icons, and no visible file system. Copilot is the only entry point users get. The documents spell out where legacy software goes: Windows 365 cloud PCs — when someone needs Excel, they get routed to a machine in the cloud.
A new icon for every conversation you open
The system’s home screen is a Dashboard: greeting cards up top — Stay on Top, Create something new, News of the day — with a row of app entry points below: Edge, Teams, Outlook, OneDrive, Microsoft 365, alongside third-party tools like Figma and Visual Studio Code.
What sets it apart from an ordinary chat window is that conversations are managed like windows. Every new conversation gets its own taskbar icon generated from its content; several conversations can run at once, each independent; closed conversations get filed into My Stuff, saved as chips you can pull back up later.
A separate feature called Spaces groups apps and plug-ins around a goal. One demo showed a space named TURKEY TRIP that automatically pulled together WhatsApp, Turkish Airlines, Expedia, Airbnb, several Word documents, and a pile of travel search results, with no manual filing required. The enterprise-side equivalent is Context IQ: type a slash command and colleagues, files, SharePoint content, and email surface directly. Email composing also gets a row of tone buttons — options include Casual, Professional, Funny, and Undead Pirate Captain.
To let Copilot understand web pages, Aion uses a method called DOM crawling that reads a page’s raw HTML directly. Scripts and markup that an ordinary user never sees in the browser are wide open to it.
The documents also record where its limits are. In one test, a user asked for a comparison table in Excel, and the system refused outright:
"I'm sorry, I cannot open Excel for you. Excel is not one of the programs that I can interact with."
The workaround is drawing the table inside the chat window and offering it as a download, then pointing the user to Excel’s PWA version to continue.
Two years later, Microsoft’s public roadmap reversed course
The timing of this leak is a little awkward. Windows chief Pavan Davuluri recently shot down Windows 12 rumors himself, stating publicly that there’s no new system on the roadmap. What the team is actually working on runs almost opposite to Aion: converting a batch of web-based apps back to native WinUI 3; stripping Copilot integrations out of Snipping Tool, Notepad, and Photos; testing a customizable Copilot position in the Windows 11 right-click menu; and promising to cut memory usage on 8GB machines before year-end, plus a Low Latency Profile to improve responsiveness.
The external environment isn’t on Aion’s side either. PC shipments are projected to fall 11% in 2026, memory shortages are expected to run through 2027, and Apple’s $599 MacBook Neo is pushing Windows OEMs to catch up on hardware quality. A system that runs entirely inside Edge and opens a separate window for every conversation carries a rough memory overhead well above a conventional desktop — in a year when even 8GB machines need dedicated optimization, it would be hard to land in the mainstream price tier.
The idea isn’t dead, it just found a new shell
Aion’s target platform list names AOSP, Win3, and Windows 11 together. That AOSP entry lines up with Solara, the agent device system Microsoft launched this June — built on Android underneath, and likewise blocking users from installing apps. A path that didn’t work out on PCs in 2024 has been reopened two years later on dedicated hardware, with the bet scaled down from ‘replace Windows’ to ‘fill a new category.’ Yusuf Mehdi, who leads Windows consumer experiences, is still talking about turning Windows 11 into an agentic OS — though he’s set to leave in a year.
The interface in the leaked documents is complete and detailed, but what’s missing is just as obvious: when Copilot misreads intent, users have no fallback — no icon to double-click, no folders, no path around the model. Enterprise IT would also struggle to audit an interface generated fresh in every conversation. Microsoft has likely already done this math, which is why its effort right now is going into fixing Windows 11.
