Salesforce acquires Contentful to fill Agentforce content gap

On June 1, Salesforce announced it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire Contentful. The price was not disclosed, but the deal's significance goes beyond the price tag.

Contentful is a headless CMS that decouples content management from presentation, treating content as structured data delivered via APIs to any front end. It serves over 4,800 enterprise brands, handles 180 billion API calls per month, and integrates with more than 20,000 applications.

What Salesforce is buying: the missing layer for Agentforce

Salesforce has been betting heavily on Agentforce, its AI agent platform for automating enterprise tasks. But agents face a gap: they can access customer data and CRM records, but assembling that data into personalized, ready-to-deliver content requires an extra layer. Contentful fills that gap.

Jujhar Singh, President of Salesforce Application Business, said:

"Every meaningful customer interaction depends on three things working together: the right data, the right AI-driven content, and a modern, effortless experience. With Contentful, we complete that picture."

Valuation story is less rosy

Contentful's last valuation was in 2021, when Tiger Global led a Series F round at over $3 billion. That wave of high SaaS valuations was notoriously inflated. Four to five years later, the acquisition price was not disclosed, but according to sources cited by Techmeme, the deal is valued at around $1-1.5 billion — less than half the 2021 figure.

Contentful is not alone. Many SaaS companies that rode the zero-interest-rate wave in 2021 have been paying the price: either raising at lower valuations or being acquired by larger firms at a discount. Contentful is among the more dignified cases — it found a buyer that actually needs its technology.

Salesforce's shopping cart gets fuller

Salesforce has been on a buying spree: in 2025 it acquired Informatica for $8 billion, plus Momentum, Qualified, and Cimulate. The strategy is clear — buy the infrastructure needed to run AI agents rather than build it in-house.

The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of Salesforce's fiscal 2027, pending regulatory approval.
