Anthropic unveils enterprise-grade Claude Cowork

Last week, San Francisco's Moscone Center hosted the HumanX conference. It wasn't the largest event, but it carried significant weight — thousands of enterprise technology decision-makers gathered to discuss how agentic AI can be implemented in practice.

Interestingly, the AI tool mentioned most frequently on the floor wasn't ChatGPT, but Claude. Some vendors even stated directly: "We use Claude extensively; OpenAI has fallen behind."

Anthropic, of course, didn't let this moment pass without capitalizing on the attention. They used the timing to announce a full set of enterprise-grade features for Claude Cowork.

What is Claude Cowork

First, some background. Claude Code is an AI programming tool for developers that has been operational for some time. Claude Cowork is Anthropic's product line aimed at a broader range of knowledge workers. It entered research preview in January of this year, positioned as an enterprise AI collaboration platform.

Anthropic's strategic intent is stated plainly:

In 2025, Claude changed how developers work. In 2026, we're going to do the same for knowledge work.

This statement signals that Anthropic isn't just looking to capture market share in enterprise programming tools. It aims to extend its reach into the larger enterprise software battlefield — covering all knowledge workers, not just those who write code.

What was announced

The feature list is lengthy, but the core logic boils down to two words: deep integration.

Private Plugin Marketplace

Enterprise administrators can now create a private plugin marketplace for their organization. The plugins employees see in Claude Cowork are entirely determined by the company's IT department. Plugin sources can connect directly to private GitHub repositories — a practical feature for companies with internal tools that need to keep code confidential.

20+ New MCP Connectors

This is the most direct expansion of capabilities. The new MCP connectors include:

CategoryTools
Google Productivity SuiteGoogle Drive, Google Calendar, Gmail
Legal / ContractingDocuSign, LegalZoom
Sales / GrowthApollo, Clay, Outreach, SimilarWeb
Finance / Investment ResearchMSCI, FactSet
Content / OperationsWordPress, Harvey

This essentially covers most common productivity and vertical tools found in enterprises.

Industry Pre-built Templates

Anthropic also introduced pre-built plugin templates tailored to different functions, covering: HR, Design, Engineering, Operations, Financial Analysis, Investment Banking, Equity Research, Private Equity, and Wealth Management.

This move indicates Anthropic is going deeper — not just offering enterprises a general-purpose AI, but providing an out-of-the-box AI workstation for people in different roles.

Shifting landscape in the enterprise market

Some scattered data points from the HumanX conference are worth noting. In terms of enterprise user adoption, Anthropic and OpenAI are now essentially neck-and-neck, with some data even showing Anthropic growing faster among commercial users.

This shift didn't happen overnight. Claude Code has built a strong reputation among developers, and many engineering teams, after adopting it, began pushing for company-wide Claude adoption. The diffusion path — from developers to product managers, analysts, and HR — is real.

But OpenAI hasn't stopped moving in this direction either. The competition between the two in the enterprise space has essentially evolved from "whose model is smarter" to "who can embed more deeply into enterprise workflows."

The MCP path

The expansion of Claude Cowork's capabilities is, at its core, an all-in bet on the MCP protocol.

A year ago, MCP was just a tool integration standard introduced by Anthropic. Now it has become an industry-wide consensus. Various vendors and SaaS tools are converging on MCP — and for Anthropic, the larger the ecosystem, the greater Claude's value.

Google and Microsoft are also pursuing similar efforts. But comparatively, Anthropic moved earlier on the MCP ecosystem and is now reaping first-mover advantages.

The 20+ new connectors are less a feature update and more a reinforcement of this ecosystem — the more tools that natively support Claude, the higher the switching costs for enterprises.

Claude Code won over developers. Can Claude Cowork win over knowledge workers? That question won't be answered today, but judging by Anthropic's pace of action, they are ready to fight this battle seriously.
