OpenAI scraps Pro 200 cut, doubles Pro 100 and 500 limits

OpenAI announced on October 29 that usage limits on its Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 tiers, as well as Business Premium, are doubling effective immediately, with prices unchanged. The news came from Thibault Sottiaux (Tibo), who leads Codex and ChatGPT Work, in a post on X, and marks day 25 of Codex's "28-day improvement plan."

The same post carried a more concrete change: the Pro 200 limit reduction that was due to take effect on October 30 has been cancelled.

How each of the three Pro tiers changes

According to OpenAI's updated Pro documentation, the tiers do not all change in the same way:

TierMonthly priceWork and Codex usage
Pro 100$100Doubled
Pro 200 (formerly low-limit accounts)$200Raised to the high-limit level
Pro 200 (formerly high-limit accounts)$200Unchanged, no longer being cut
Pro 500$500Doubled

Plus limits are unchanged. For regular chat, the weekly number of GPT-6 Pro messages stays the same on Pro 100 and Pro 500, while low-limit Pro 200 accounts are lifted to match high-limit accounts. New subscriptions are billed against the new limits straight away, and existing subscribers get them automatically without waiting for renewal.

Sottiaux said the Pro 200 reduction was dropped after listening to user feedback. He also said the extended allowance for dots will continue "for now." Conversations with dots themselves do not count toward ChatGPT usage, but tasks it launches inside Work or Codex are still charged against the limits of the respective product. No end date has been given for this extended allowance.

Three reversals in one month

Put the adjustments since September side by side and the direction of Pro 200 has kept shifting.

On September 10, one week after GPT-6 Astra launched, OpenAI paused new subscriptions to the $200 tier, citing overwhelming demand. When it reopened on September 30, limits were recalculated based on API spend. Sottiaux worked out at the time that this came to about half of the old allowance. According to reports from that period, Pro 200's Work and Codex allowance was to fall from 20 times Plus to 10 times Plus, with a protection period for existing users running until October 29.

On October 5, Codex began its "28-day improvement plan," promising to ship one improvement a day and to reset users' limits once if it missed a day. Day 24 brought a monthly API credit for ChatGPT Pro users equal to their monthly fee, capped at $500 for Business workspaces.

This doubling lands on the very day the protection period ends, and the reduction that was meant to hit existing users did not go ahead.

Numbers that still do not add up

  • Business Premium: the announcement headline names it, but the updated documentation spells out changes only for the Pro tiers. Neither the multiplier nor the actual limits for Premium seats are given;
  • Actual limits: OpenAI has not published fixed figures for how many messages per week or how many Codex tasks each tier allows. The "10x" and "20x" figures are only what September reports said;
  • How long it lasts: the dots extended allowance is described only as available "for now." The 28-day plan has three days left, and the company has not said whether limit policy will change again afterward.
