Anthropic has paused the two most talked-about perks in the Claude startup program: a free year of Claude Team and $1,000 in API credits. The official Claude account said the company underestimated demand. Applications reached into the hundreds of thousands, and the team is re-reviewing them so that the program can reach as many companies as possible.
Both perks were only added to the program on October 6, so the pause came in under three days.
What stopped, and what stays
Based on the official statement and the Q&A on the program page, the impact falls into three cases.
- Already claimed: keep using it as normal. The Team seats and credits in the account will not be taken back.
- Approved but not yet claimed: these go back into review, and some of those accounts will not receive the perks.
- Other benefits: every accepted member can still use the Startup Stack and join the Q&A sessions and events run by the applied AI team. Users on a Max or Team plan continue to receive their monthly API credits in the Console.
The program page now describes the two perks as "over capacity," meaning the available spots are full. It does not use the word "paused" and gives no date for a return. The page also says the program is being reshaped and that the status of some applications may change.
The version from three days ago
The October 6 expansion was announced by Anthropic during San Francisco Tech Week, and the terms were fairly generous. Companies founded within the past five years, or that had raised funding within the past two, could apply. Bootstrapped and pre-seed teams were also eligible, and the stated goal was to finish reviews within a week. The Team plan came with up to five premium seats, plus $1,000 in API credits, access to build plugins for the Claude Marketplace, and online office hours with the applied AI team. A three-day Founder House event was held in San Francisco at the same time.
TechCrunch quoted Anthropic at the time as saying, in essence, that the benefits of AI will reach ordinary people mainly through companies that build products on top of models, which is why working closely with founders and developers is central to its mission.
Two other layers of the program are not affected. One is the Startup Stack, a bundle of discounts from third-party companies including ElevenLabs, ClickHouse, Granola and Hex, which the page lists at up to $45,000 in total value. The other is the venture partner route: companies backed by VC firms in Anthropic's partner network can apply, through their investor, for up to $100,000 in API credits.
Doing the math
A $1,000 credit is not large on its own, but multiplied by the number of applicants it becomes something else.
At the pricing of Claude Haiku 5.5, released on October 7, prompts of up to 100,000 tokens cost $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens. A rough calculation shows that $1,000 covers 10 billion input tokens or 2 billion output tokens, which would sustain a fledgling team through a long prototyping phase.
Taking 100,000 companies, the low end of "hundreds of thousands," as the applicant count, handing out credits to all of them would put the face value of the API credits alone at $100 million, before counting a year of Team seats. That is face value only. Most teams will not use their full allotment, so actual cost would be far lower. Still, a program originally sized for a few thousand companies suddenly having to honor claims from a hundred thousand makes a pause unsurprising. Anthropic has not disclosed how many applications it originally expected, nor how many it intends to keep after the re-review.
Two other restrictions are stated clearly on the page. The credits only work on Claude's first-party API, and calls made through AWS Bedrock or Google Vertex AI do not count. Members who receive credits automatically get higher rate limits.
What remains unclear
Anthropic has not explained which approved accounts will be cancelled, or whether the basis is company age, funding history or intended usage. No restoration date has been given either. The program terms already state that Anthropic may modify, suspend or end the program at any time, so from a contractual standpoint the pause does not overstep.
For small teams that have already budgeted their tooling around a free year of Team, the practical step for now is to check the status shown in the Console. If it reads as redeemed, carry on. If it reads as approved but unclaimed, the only option is to wait for the outcome of the re-review.
