Nvidia Puts $5B Behind SSI

Safe Superintelligence, the company Ilya Sutskever founded after leaving OpenAI, has moved from a sparse mission statement to a much harder infrastructure commitment. On July 27, Nvidia and SSI announced a long-term strategic partnership around Nvidia's Vera Rubin platform.

Compute is the visible product

The official statement says SSI will use Vera Rubin and gain an order-of-magnitude increase in compute capacity for its closely guarded research. Nvidia described its investment as substantial; Reuters reported, citing people familiar with the matter, that the equity investment is about $5 billion.

Vera Rubin is Nvidia's next data-center platform after Blackwell Ultra. Nvidia's own platform materials describe a Rubin NVL72 system with 72 Rubin GPUs and 36 Vera CPUs, and say Rubin CPX can raise performance by 30x and lower total cost of ownership by 3x for long-context inference workloads.

The financing is also a supply-chain move

SSI was founded in 2024 by Sutskever, Daniel Gross and Daniel Levy. It previously raised $1 billion, and later reports put its valuation at $32 billion with backers including Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia, DST Global and Alphabet's CapitalG.

Sutskever told TechCrunch: “We have research that is worthy of scaling up, and having access to a big NVIDIA computer will let us do so.” The practical meaning is simple: SSI is asking the market to judge its next step by access to frontier compute before it shows a model or product.

What to watch now

The useful checks are delivery and disclosure. Vera Rubin still has to arrive on schedule, SSI still has to show research or safety evaluations, and Nvidia's reported $5 billion commitment still has to appear in financing records. Until then, the partnership marks a strategic position in the next compute queue.
