Perplexity drops search for Computer, monthly revenue up 50%

You think Perplexity is just a smarter search engine? That was last year.

By April, Perplexity is selling a product called Computer that can plan marketing campaigns, optimize ad placements, and even generate complete U.S. federal tax returns. Search is just the entry point, not the destination.

ARR jumped 50%, driven by more than search

In March, Perplexity's annualized revenue (ARR) surpassed $450 million, a 50% increase from the previous month. Behind that number is a genuine business model shift.

Compare the timeline:

  • Early 2024: ARR around $10 million
  • Mid-2025: $148 million
  • March 2026: $450 million

The growth curve has steepened by more than one notch. This isn't just user growth; the nature of the product has changed.

What exactly is Computer

Computer is not a search engine. It is an orchestration layer that combines the capabilities of 19 model providers, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, to execute multi-step workflows.

What it can do:

  • Review documents and formulate marketing plans
  • Adjust ad placements in real time
  • Generate complete U.S. federal tax filings ("Computer for Taxes")
  • Replace end-to-end complex workflows

One internal test: Computer replaced a marketing tech stack that previously cost $250,000 per year, and it took a weekend. That number is worth taking seriously.

The business model pivot

Two things happened simultaneously:

Ads were removed: Perplexity shut down its advertising business in February, citing the need to protect AI output credibility. That is a significant signal — they are betting on subscriptions and usage-based billing, not traffic monetization.

Usage-based billing arrived: The subscription model shifted from a fixed monthly fee to usage-based billing, with transparent token costs and spending caps. The Max plan costs $200 per month, includes a base allowance, and charges for overages at near-cost prices with no platform markup.

This pricing model looks more like enterprise software than a consumer product.

Who is this move targeting

On the surface, Perplexity competes with search engines, but that positioning is no longer accurate. Computer's competitors are closer to workflow tools like Salesforce and HubSpot than to Google Search.

At the same time, Perplexity launched a startup competition: open to U.S. users, build a company from scratch in 8 weeks using Perplexity Computer, with a $1 million prize. The competition itself is the best product advertisement — if Computer can really help you get a business running in 8 weeks, its value far exceeds $200 per month.

Perplexity has left the search engine track. The next stage of competitors will be a tougher fight.
