Claude Enters Google Docs, Sheets and Slides

Anthropic opened a public beta of Claude for Google Workspace on October 6, bringing Claude into Google Docs, Sheets and Slides as a sidebar. It's available on every paid Claude plan — install it from the Google Workspace Marketplace, then open it from the Extensions menu inside a file.

The sidebar reads whatever file is currently open and edits it directly. Users can turn on an "ask before edits" mode that previews each change before it's written into the document.

What each app can do

In Docs, Claude can fix typos, rewrite specific passages, and adjust the formatting of a section without breaking the existing layout. In Sheets, it can write formulas and build tables based on the spreadsheet's context, or turn an uploaded document or table into material for a new sheet. In Slides, it builds new pages using the deck's existing layouts and themes, and flags elements that may need updating.

Three connectors launched the same day, also in testing: pasting a Google file link into Claude's chat window lets users create or edit Docs, Sheets and Slides directly. The existing Google Drive connector continues to handle searching, uploading and sharing files.

Launching alongside this is Work skills, which lets teams package fixed workflows — report-writing steps, checklists and the like — into reusable bundles that work across both Claude and Google Workspace.

Two entry points, unequal capabilities

The sidebar and the chat connector look like they do the same thing, but the details differ quite a bit:

FeatureSidebar in GoogleConnector in Claude chat
Docs commentsNot supportedSupported
Slides chartsInserted as images onlyNot supported
Suggested editsDirect edits onlyCan read them

To have Claude work through comments one by one, you need to go back to the chat window; to put a chart into a slide, you're limited to the sidebar — and what comes out is an image.

Admin control is split between the two platforms: Google Workspace admins decide who can install the add-on, while Claude's own admins control which models, connectors and skills are available. On data handling, inputs and outputs are deleted within 30 days, but custom enterprise data-retention policies don't apply during the beta — something compliance-sensitive companies will want to clarify upfront.

Seen alongside the Office push

This isn't the first time Anthropic has slotted Claude into someone else's office software. In May, Claude was already plugged into Microsoft Office apps like Excel and Word, and OpenAI has connected ChatGPT to Excel and Google Sheets as well. Both companies are taking a similar approach: rather than building their own document software, they're going straight into the windows people already open every day.

Google's situation is more complicated, since Gemini is already built into Workspace and can draft and rewrite documents on its own. 9to5Google put it bluntly: "Gemini can do much of this." Claude's add-on mainly gives people who are already used to Claude an option that doesn't require switching tools. Both sides emphasize portability for Work skills, but Claude's skills and Gemini's aren't interchangeable.

For teams in mainland China, this update has limited relevance. Google Workspace already sees little use there — mainly among foreign enterprises and companies expanding overseas — and paid Claude accounts aren't available in mainland China either. For the users who are affected, the update just saves a step of copying and pasting between browser tabs.
