Anthropic Launches Claude Design, Figma Stock Drops 6.8%

On April 17, Anthropic launched a new product called Claude Design.

Figma's stock fell 6.8% that same day.

The connection between these two events runs deeper than it appears on the surface.

What Exactly Is Claude Design

Simply put: you describe an idea in text, and Claude Design creates a design draft for you.

Anthropic provided an example — you input a request for a mobile prototype of a meditation app, using serene fonts, nature-inspired colors, and a clean layout. Seconds later, a complete app prototype appears on the screen.

You can then iterate with text: change colors, adjust the layout, swap copy. The entire process feels like a conversation with a designer, not like using a tool.

The product is powered by Claude Opus 4.7 and supports the following outputs:

  • App and web prototypes
  • Presentations and slide decks
  • Marketing materials and one-pagers
  • Interactive data visualizations

Export formats include Canva, PDF, PPTX, and standalone HTML files.

Who Is Using It and For What

Anthropic's positioning is clear: Claude Design is not for professional designers. It is for people without a design background.

Founders who need to quickly create product prototypes for investors; product managers who need to turn requirement documents into clickable demos; marketing teams who need weekly reports, proposals, and event materials — these people previously either had to hire a designer or make do with dragging and dropping in Canva.

For enterprise users, Claude Design has a key feature: it can read a company's codebase and design files, automatically applying your brand design system to every output. Different teams maintaining different design systems is not a problem — each team can use its own.

It is currently available as a Research Preview. Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise users can use it at no additional cost.

Why Figma Dropped

Figma is currently the world's most mainstream UI design collaboration tool. Designers create mockups in Figma, developers check Figma's annotations, product teams review in Figma — this is the workflow for most tech companies.

Figma was secure in this value chain — until Claude Design appeared.

What made investors even more nervous was a specific timing detail: the same week, Anthropic's Chief Product Officer Mike Krieger quietly resigned from the Figma board of directors.

Mike Krieger, co-founder of Instagram, joined Anthropic as CPO in 2023 while also serving on Figma's board. His resignation is widely interpreted by the industry as: Anthropic internally already views Claude Design as a direct competitive product, creating a conflict of interest.

Since Figma's IPO last summer, its stock has fallen more than 80% from its IPO high. This latest 6.8% drop adds to the pain.

Competition or Cooperation with Canva

Here is where it gets interesting: Claude Design's export formats include Canva.

Anthropic's official statement is that Claude Design is a complement to Canva, not a competitor — first quickly generate creative drafts in Claude Design, then export to Canva for fine-tuning.

This positioning is clever, and also ambiguous. Canva already has 265 million monthly active users and is the world's third-largest generative AI product. If Anthropic positions Canva as a partner, it can avoid pushing this massive user base toward a competitor.

But for users, if Claude Design's output quality is good enough, who still needs Canva?

Coincidentally, on the same day Claude Design was released (April 16), Canva also held its annual conference, launching a fully revamped Canva AI 2.0 — with large-scale advances in conversational design and agent automation. Both companies announced their visions for the future of AI design in the same week, but with completely different positioning.

Where This Shot Was Aimed

Anthropic built Claude Design not to compete with Figma for the professional designer market.

Rather, it is saying: since Claude can already generate code, write documents, and perform analysis, why not also handle visual output?

For the vast number of soft needs inside companies — product proposal visuals, fundraising pitch decks, internal report visualizations — Claude Design is sufficient. These needs were previously handled in Figma; now they can be completed directly in Claude.

Figma's moat has always been that all the designers are here. But if more and more visual content no longer requires a designer's involvement, the meaning of that moat begins to erode.
