BYD confirms humanoid robot work

BYD executive vice president Stella Li has acknowledged that the company is developing humanoid robots, confirming a project that had been circulating as a rumor after reporting by Yicai.

What changed

The logic is not far from cars. Humanoid robots need batteries, motors, sensors, chips, perception, decision-making and motion control. BYD already has many of those pieces from electric vehicles and driver-assistance work.

What to watch

The company has two notable ideas: sell future home robots through its national dealer network, and build an open platform that can support its own robots and partners’ development. Near-term use is more likely in warehouses, supermarkets and other repetitive enterprise settings than in living rooms.
