Moonshot AI has just added $2 billion in fresh capital and reached a $20 billion valuation.
The Kimi developer announced the round on May 7. Long-Z Investments, the Meituan-backed investment arm, led the deal, with Tsinghua University, China Mobile and CPE Yuanfeng again appearing among the backers. Six months ago, Moonshot was valued at $4.3 billion. Since then, its valuation has climbed nearly fivefold, and the company has raised about $3.9 billion in total.
A year earlier, a $20 billion private-market valuation for a Chinese foundation-model company would have sounded fanciful. Now investors are willing to underwrite it, and the logic behind that number is worth unpacking.
Where the money came from, and why the price moved this high
The financing path has moved quickly:
- End of 2025: valued at $4.3 billion
- Early 2026: raised $700 million and moved to a $10 billion valuation
- May 2026: raised $2 billion at a $20 billion valuation
- April 2026: annualized recurring revenue passed $200 million
A company with $200 million in ARR and a $20 billion valuation is being priced at roughly 100 times sales. That would be hard to defend in traditional SaaS. In foundation models, investors are using a different yardstick. They are paying for the model moat itself, and for a signal that Kimi K2.6 has already ranked second by usage on OpenRouter, behind only the leading closed models.
K2.6 is a trillion-parameter MoE model with 384 expert networks and KV cache compressed into latent space. Around it, Moonshot has built Kimi Code, a coding agent; Kimi-VL, a vision-language model; the Muon training framework; and Kimi Delta Attention, an attention mechanism designed to handle a one-million-token context window.
In plain terms, Moonshot is no longer just a chatbot company. It is becoming a full-stack model supplier. That is the real argument behind the $20 billion valuation.
China's model-company valuations are being rewritten
The same week offered a revealing snapshot of China's leading AI companies:
| Company | Valuation | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Zhipu AI | $55.9 billion Hong Kong market value | Listed |
| MiniMax | $33 billion Hong Kong market value | Listed |
| DeepSeek | Reported $45 billion | In talks for its first outside financing |
| Moonshot AI | $20 billion | Latest private-market round |
Zhipu and MiniMax have taken the Hong Kong listing route, where public-market valuations are even more aggressive than private-market pricing. DeepSeek is the more delicate case: Liang Wenfeng held off venture capital for three years, yet market chatter now puts the company's possible valuation at $45 billion. If a financing closes at that level, DeepSeek would become more than twice Moonshot's size overnight.
That timing makes Moonshot's round especially interesting. Before DeepSeek sets the price for its first outside capital, Moonshot has locked in its own position.
What Kimi is betting on
Yang Zhilin's bet has been consistent: push the model as far as possible, then use token pricing to pressure rivals. From K1 to K2 and now K2.6, each generation has focused on the same two goals: stretch the context window and drive inference costs lower. Muon reduces hardware requirements for training, while Kimi Delta Attention is meant to keep a one-million-token context from becoming a memory sink.
That strategy plays well in China's price-heavy model market. It also carries a risk. In the model layer, the valuation ceiling still depends heavily on whether commercialization can keep pace. A $20 billion valuation on $200 million of ARR already prices in much of the next five to seven years of growth. Investors are effectively buying a China-version-of-Anthropic story. To make that story work, Moonshot likely needs to push ARR toward $500 million to $600 million before year-end.
If the company can keep compounding, the valuation has room to rise. If it cannot, $20 billion may be the ceiling.
As for when DeepSeek finally shows its hand, everyone is still waiting.
