Hugging Face has just released its 2026 spring open-source ecosystem report, and several data points are striking:
Platform Scale
- Users: 13 million
- Public models: over 2 million
- Public datasets: over 500,000
All three metrics have nearly doubled year-over-year.
Biggest Change: Chinese Models Account for 41% of Downloads
Chinese models' download share on Hugging Face reached 41%, surpassing the US for the first time.
Baidu went from zero releases in 2024 to over 100 models in 2025. ByteDance and Tencent each grew 8 to 9 times. This explosive pace shows that Chinese AI companies are treating Hugging Face as a global distribution channel.
Extreme Long-Tail Distribution
About half of all models have fewer than 200 total downloads. Meanwhile, the top 200 models (0.01% of the total) contributed 49.6% of all downloads.
Such extreme concentration means the vast majority of uploaded models are barely used. Behind the "2 million models" headline, only a few thousand likely have real practical value.
Other Trends
Rise of Independent Developers: In 2025, independent developers contributed 39% of model downloads, while industry's share dropped from 70% to 37%. The power of individuals and small teams is increasingly hard to ignore.
Robotics Boom: Robotics-related datasets surged from 1,145 to 26,991, becoming the largest single dataset category.
South Korea's Sovereign AI Plans: LG, SK Telecom, Naver, and other giants joined in. In February, three Korean models simultaneously topped Hugging Face's trending list.
The globalization landscape of open source is shifting from "US-led" to "China-US dual drive plus global participation." Hugging Face's role as a neutral platform is becoming increasingly important.
