What happened yesterday
On the afternoon of April 21, someone posted a screenshot online: Anthropic's pricing page had quietly changed. Next to the $20/month Pro plan, the green checkmark for Claude Code had been replaced with a cross.
This wasn't a product shutdown — Claude Code was simply removed from the cheapest plan.
After the news spread, Anthropic's head of growth, Amol Avasare, quickly took to social media to calm things down, calling it "a small test affecting about 2% of new users" and assuring that existing subscribers were not affected.
Then, in less than a day, the change was quietly rolled back.
But the story doesn't end there.
Why Anthropic wanted to do this
Avasare made a noteworthy statement: "usage has changed a lot and our current plans weren't built for this."
Usage patterns have shifted, and the current plan structure can't keep up.
In plain terms: too many people are running Claude Code heavily on the $20/month plan, and Anthropic can no longer make the numbers work.
Claude Code is essentially an API-intensive tool that constantly sends requests to the model. Every code generation, every agent loop, every multi-file change consumes tokens. Anthropic charges for API usage by the token, but the Pro plan includes these at a "fixed price within the quota."
That's the core problem: developers' actual usage of Claude Code has far exceeded what the Pro plan was designed to handle.
JetBrains' AI Pulse survey of over 10,000 developers in January this year showed that professional developers' work-related usage of Claude Code had grown sixfold compared to last spring, with a satisfaction rate of 91%. The more popular it gets, the higher the cost, and the harder it becomes to sustain the $20 plan.
The $100 Max plan is what they really want to sell
The current plan lineup looks roughly like this:
| Plan | Monthly Price | Claude Code |
|---|---|---|
| Pro | $20 | Tested for removal |
| Max 5x | $100 | 5x the quota of Pro |
| Max 20x | $200 | 20x the quota of Pro |
This "test" made the message clear: heavy Claude Code usage doesn't work at $20.
Removing Claude Code from Pro is the beginning of a pricing restructuring, not the end. The most likely next step: Pro retains lightweight Claude Code access (with a hard weekly cap), while heavy users must pay $100 for Max.
Developer reactions
Online reactions were intense. Some felt betrayed, others said they saw it coming, and a few remarked, "Good thing I'm already on Max."
But one comment hit the mark:
"Anthropic should spend this energy thinking about why I should keep using Claude Code instead of switching to Codex."
That's a bit sharp, but not unreasonable. Claude Code faces much stiffer competition than it did six months ago — OpenAI's Codex is catching up fast, Cursor just raised funds at a $50 billion valuation, and Windsurf is pushing into the enterprise space.
Testing pricing boundaries at the height of competition is a delicate timing play.
Current status
As of this writing, the change has been rolled back, and the Claude Code checkmark is back on the Pro plan. But Avasare's words remain: "existing subscribers aren't affected" — a qualifier that suggests they are still working on pricing for new users.
He also said: "If it affects existing users, we'll notify them in advance." This statement makes it almost certain: change is a matter of when, not if.
The surge in Claude Code usage is a double-edged sword for Anthropic. The good news is that the product is increasingly in demand. The bad news is that under the current pricing, every additional heavy user could mean a loss. This test was pulled back early, but pricing restructuring is already underway. Users relying on the $20 plan to run Claude Code should start thinking about Plan B now.
