Canva shifts to AI platform with 265 million monthly active users and $42 billion valuation

On April 16, Canva held its annual conference Canva Create 2026 in Los Angeles, unveiling what it called the "biggest product upgrade" in its history.

CEO Mel Perkins opened with this line:

"Canva is no longer a design platform with AI features; it is now an AI platform with design capabilities."

The two statements sound similar, but the logic behind them is fundamentally different.

From tool to Agent

What was Canva's AI before? A "magic wand" — you design, and AI helps optimize the background, generate an image, or suggest a color palette. You held the initiative; AI was an assistant.

Canva AI 2.0 flips that relationship.

Now you can tell Canva: "Track this week's AI industry news, generate a summary every morning, and automatically post it to a Slack channel." Canva will crawl web pages, organize information, generate content, and send it out while you sleep — by the time you wake up, the work is done.

COO Cliff Obrecht said:

"Our platform can now help you complete an entire workflow, not just the design part."

This is a classic Agent product logic, not a tool product logic.

Key new features

Conversational design

Drive design with natural language. No need to click menus or drag assets — just say "change this headline to orange and the background to a clean geometric pattern," and Canva does it. The entire design process supports ongoing conversational edits with no "one-shot irreversible" problem.

Persistent memory

Canva remembers your brand colors, font preferences, and content style. Switch computers, open Canva, and it still remembers you once said "our brand style is professional but not formal." More usefully: when brand assets are updated, all existing designs automatically update accordingly.

Automated scheduling

This is the most aggressive part:

  • Automatically generate batches of social media content weekly
  • Automatically generate industry briefings every morning
  • Track competitor news and automatically organize it
  • All outputs require human approval before being sent out

This feature is currently in Research Preview, unlocked via a hidden Easter egg, and open to the first one million users.

MCP connectors

Connect to external tools via the MCP protocol: Gmail, Slack, Zoom, Google Drive, Google Calendar, Notion. Canva says "hundreds of MCP connectors" will follow.

Why they can achieve "7x faster and 30x cheaper"

The key behind it: Canva does not use OpenAI or Anthropic's APIs.

Through acquisitions of Leonardo AI, Simtheory, Ortto, and others, Canva built its own AI team and trained models specifically designed for design scenarios.

Mel Perkins stated directly:

"We have 265 million users honing our service at high frequency — we must own the models ourselves."

Using frontier models costs 30 times more than Canva's self-developed models. For a platform processing hundreds of millions of design requests daily, this gap is a matter of survival.

How the market landscape shifts

Canva is clear about its situation — don't transform and die, or transform and have a chance to live.

CompanyCurrent status
Canva265 million MAU, $42B valuation, $3.5B annual revenue
AdobeStock down over 30%, creative tools eroded by AI
FigmaDown 85% since IPO, hit head-on by Claude Design the same week

Interesting timing: Canva AI 2.0 and Anthropic's Claude Design launched on the same day. Both products are doing "AI design," but with distinctly different positioning — Claude Design targets people without a design background, while Canva upgrades its 265 million existing users into Agent mode.

The COO also said something worth remembering:

"If we don't disrupt ourselves, someone else will disrupt us."

That judgment applies equally to Adobe, though Adobe seems to have been hesitating on how far to go.

Canva's IPO "could come in the next few years." Before that, Canva AI 2.0 is both a product strategy and a story for investors: we are not just a design tool — we are an enterprise AI workflow platform.

That story is worth much more than a mere design tool.
