Doubao Work Drops 5-Hour Cap on Personal Plans

Doubao Work (豆包工作), the agent product from ByteDance, changed the quota rules for its personal edition on November 6: the 5-hour usage limit is gone. Individual users are now bound only by a weekly quota, and when to use it during the week, in one burst or spread out, is up to them. The size of the weekly quota and the other usage rules are unchanged and still follow each subscription plan; the exact figures can be checked in the app under Settings, then Subscription & Quota Management.

Time Finance (时代财经) was first to report the change, and IT Home followed. The company did not announce a higher weekly quota alongside it.

Two gates become one

Before the change, paid usage on Doubao Work was metered over two rolling windows at the same time: one of 5 hours and one of 7 days. Running out of either one paused the account. The most common case was a weekly quota with plenty left while the 5-hour window hit bottom first, leaving a task half done until the reset.

Doubao Work is positioned as a productivity tool. It breaks a goal into steps on its own, calls tools, and handles research and analysis, writing, data processing and app building. Agent tasks like these burn a lot per run and are concentrated in time: an industry research report or a small app can easily run for an hour or two straight, firing off many searches and code executions along the way. A 5-hour window is barely noticeable in chat-style Q&A, but for long tasks it is a hard ceiling.

On paid tiers, Doubao Pro (豆包专业版) was previously reported to have three levels: Standard, Enhanced and Advanced, at 68, 200 and 500 yuan per month on a continuous monthly plan, with quotas of roughly 5x, 20x and 50x the free edition. These figures come from third-party compilations, and the official purchase page is authoritative; this change did not touch pricing either.

How overseas rivals handle it

Dual metering with a rolling 5-hour window plus a weekly quota is common among overseas coding and agent products, and it is the scheme Doubao Work had been using. Over the past few months, vendors have moved in different directions:

  • Anthropic renamed its $200 Claude tier Ultra and removed that tier's 5-hour limit;
  • OpenAI put a five-hour limit back on ChatGPT Plus, and plans to merge ChatGPT and Codex usage into a single pool starting in December;
  • Claude Code's weekly limit was raised by 25% earlier, but our own estimate at the time put actual usable volume about 17% lower than before the change.

Across the board, the vendors that dropped the short-window cap all kept the weekly one. Doubao Work's approach is close to Claude Ultra's, with the difference that it applies to the whole personal edition rather than a single tier.

The short-window cap mainly serves to shave peaks. When many users run long tasks at the same time during weekday daytime, compute gets crowded into a few hours; with the cap gone, the queuing pressure at peak times shifts to the server side. Whether Doubao Work will absorb that pressure through queuing, slowdowns or swapping in smaller models is not addressed in the official statement, and there is not yet enough user feedback to confirm.

What changes for paying users

Users who concentrate their usage on one or two days a week will notice it most. Previously a single day could be chopped into several segments by the 5-hour window; now they can finish the day's work in one run. People who use it evenly every day will see little change, since the weekly quota is still the ceiling.

ByteDance has been shipping features for Doubao Work at a rapid clip lately: a canvas, parallel multi-agent runs, computer control on Mac, saving recorded computer operations as skills, and one-click import of conversations and memory from products such as ChatGPT. For enterprise customers it has also connected third-party models including Kimi, GLM and DeepSeek. Seen alongside those features, the looser quota rules point in one direction: getting users to hand it longer and heavier tasks.
