Moonshot AI has reportedly closed a funding round of more than $3.5 billion, reaching a post-money valuation of $35 billion. The timing matters: the financing follows the release and open-weight rollout of Kimi K3, the 2.8 trillion-parameter model with a 1 million-token context window.
The round changed shape
The Paper reported that Moonshot’s F round exceeded $3.5 billion and that a pre-IPO G round has already started at a targeted $50 billion pre-money valuation. Bloomberg, republished by Economic Times, said the original target had been $1 billion to $2 billion and named China’s National AI Industry Investment Fund among the lead investors.
The figures need labels. $3.5 billion is the reported round size, $35 billion is post-money valuation, and $50 billion is the next-round pre-money target. Moonshot has not publicly confirmed the details, so the financing should be treated as market reporting rather than a company announcement.
K3 became the pricing hook
Bloomberg also reported that Moonshot reached $300 million in annual recurring revenue in June, up from $200 million in April, and that daily sales rose at least sixfold after K3 launched. Those are source-based estimates, but they explain why investors are looking beyond a model demo.
K3 gives the story technical weight. It has 2.8 trillion parameters, a 1 million-token context window and downloadable weights. The Paper also cited cloud adaptation work: Alibaba Cloud’s Zhenwu M890 instance links 64 chips with 9TB of memory, with optimizations cutting first-token latency by about 35% and lifting single-card decode throughput by 1.8x.
The IPO test is harder
The next checks are not social buzz. Investors will look for audited revenue, durable API and enterprise usage, external K3 benchmark results, and stable deployment on Chinese compute. If those hold, open weights may become Moonshot’s distribution advantage before a Hong Kong listing. If usage fades, the $50 billion pre-IPO target will face pressure first.
