Apple rents a custom Gemini model for Siri

Apple’s rebuilt Siri is reportedly powered in the cloud by a custom 1.2 trillion-parameter Gemini model, with Apple paying Google about $1 billion a year under a multiyear contract.

What changed

The model runs on Nvidia B200 chips inside Apple’s Private Cloud Compute nodes. The privacy condition is central: Google cannot use Apple user queries to train future Google models.

What to watch

Siri also becomes more of a model gateway, with a Search or Ask panel that can route questions to Siri, ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude. Apple is effectively admitting it needs outside frontier models while keeping control of the iPhone entry point.
