SpaceX Leases Colossus 1 to Anthropic

Musk's so-called evil detector did not go off this time.

SpaceX has leased the full capacity of Colossus 1, a Memphis supercomputer with more than 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs and over 300 megawatts of power, to Anthropic. The buyer is a frontier AI lab competing in the same arena as OpenAI and xAI.

The awkward part is hard to miss. Musk is still suing OpenAI for $150 billion, accusing Sam Altman and Greg Brockman of betraying the nonprofit mission. At the same time, one of his companies is selling its most valuable AI compute asset to Anthropic, giving Claude more room to train and serve users.

Business is business. Grudges are something else.

The Deal: 220,000 GPUs and 300 Megawatts

The agreement centers on several concrete figures:

  • Compute scale: Colossus 1 has more than 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs in Memphis, Tennessee.
  • Power capacity: the site adds more than 300 megawatts, roughly enough electricity for 300,000 U.S. homes.
  • Timing: Anthropic is expected to take over the full capacity within the month.
  • Longer horizon: both sides signaled interest in multi-gigawatt orbital AI compute.

Anthropic's public comment on X was brief: the company said its partnership with SpaceX would significantly expand its compute capacity.

Musk's own framing was more revealing. He said that nobody on the Anthropic team had triggered his evil detector, essentially saying the people he met did not strike him as bad actors.

What Anthropic Gets From the Capacity

The first user-facing changes arrived almost immediately.

  • Paid Claude Code rate limits were doubled.
  • Peak-time throttling was removed for Pro and Max users.
  • Request capacity for the Opus model was increased sharply.

In plain terms, customers paying $200 a month who still ran into Claude usage walls should get more breathing room.

The larger story is Anthropic's compute balance sheet. With SpaceX added to previously disclosed arrangements, its supply picture now includes Amazon for up to 5 gigawatts, Google and Broadcom for another 5 gigawatts, a $30 billion Microsoft Azure arrangement involving NVIDIA, Fluidstack's $50 billion U.S. infrastructure plan, and SpaceX's 220,000-GPU Colossus 1.

That is more capacity than the total installed power base of some developed countries. Anthropic is betting that compute itself is the moat: if supply keeps arriving, model iteration and user growth can continue.

The Politics Are the Interesting Part

The most interesting part is not technical. It is political.

Last year, the Trump administration pushed an AI security agreement that asked frontier AI companies to pass through government review before releasing advanced systems. Microsoft, Google and xAI signed. Anthropic was not on the list.

That put xAI in the camp publicly favored by Trump, while Anthropic was left outside the circle. Commercial reality is less tidy. xAI can use only part of Colossus for Grok, and unused capacity is worth more when sold to a rival willing to pay for it.

Silicon Valley has seen this pattern before. Microsoft backs both OpenAI and Anthropic. AWS builds infrastructure for Anthropic while also running Bedrock. Google competes with Anthropic in products while supplying it with cloud resources. At the compute layer, the companies bind themselves together; at the product layer, they fight.

Musk may genuinely like Dario Amodei's team. He may also simply need idle GPUs to generate revenue. The two explanations can both be true.

Orbital Data Centers Are Still Far Away

One line in the announcement deserves attention: SpaceX was described as the only organization with the launch cadence, orbital mass economics and constellation operating experience to make orbital compute a near-term engineering project.

In other words, the pitch is to put data centers in space.

That still sounds like science fiction, but the chain of logic is clear. The bottleneck for AI infrastructure is shifting from GPUs to power and cooling. Power grids on the ground are under strain, while space offers constant solar exposure and vacuum cooling. Whether the economics work is another question, but the idea is no longer pure fantasy.

Panthalassa previously raised $140 million for floating offshore data centers. SpaceX and Anthropic are now pointing toward orbit. AI infrastructure is being pushed to the edges of the planet.

How Long Can This Partnership Last?

In the short term, Anthropic gets relief from compute pressure, and Musk monetizes spare capacity. Both sides win.

The long-term picture is harder. If Grok and Claude end up in direct hand-to-hand competition in markets such as coding or enterprise agents, will xAI still let Anthropic sit near the front of the Colossus queue? SpaceX controls the allocation, and Musk's decisions often carry an emotional charge.

For now, in 2026, the deal redraws one rule of the Silicon Valley compute race: model companies do not have to own every data center, but they do need enough suppliers that no single provider can choke them.

Anthropic has learned that lesson.
