Google's AI system just changed two key gears at once.
Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed that Demis Hassabis will become chair of Google DeepMind and chief scientist of Alphabet, while Koray Kavukcuoglu steps up as SVP of Google DeepMind. Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat are leaving with Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le to start Discovery Loop, a public-benefit AI company.
Gemini moves into an execution lane
Pichai pointed to self-reported scale: the Gemini app has 950M+ monthly users and Gemma models have passed 900M+ downloads. Kavukcuoglu, a 13-year DeepMind veteran, will oversee Gemini model development, frontier research, the Gemini app, and developer teams.

Hassabis framed his move around AGI strategy, science, and Isomorphic Labs. In plain terms, DeepMind's operating cadence shifts to Kavukcuoglu while Hassabis keeps the long-horizon brief.
Dean is taking the research loop outside
The Verge and Google's note identify Dean as Google's 30th employee after a 27-year run. Discovery Loop lists four founders: Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le, and Oriol Vinyals. Their shared track record includes TensorFlow, TPUs, Pathways, AlphaCode, AlphaFold, Gemini, word2vec, sequence-to-sequence models, and chain-of-thought reasoning.

The company wants AI systems to propose experiments, run evaluations, inspect results, and iterate. Google remains a founding investor and cloud partner, so Dean leaves the payroll while the infrastructure link stays alive.
The test is delivery
The near-term signal is Gemini 4 timing and quality. The longer test is whether Discovery Loop can publish working systems rather than only a mission page. For Chinese AI companies, the useful lesson is organizational: when models become infrastructure, the way a lab routes talent, compute, and product accountability becomes part of the moat.
