Anthropic launched Claude for Legal on May 12, packaging 12 practice-area plugins with more than 20 MCP connectors for the tools lawyers already use. The list spans contracts, document management, e-discovery, transaction rooms and legal research, including Thomson Reuters and LexisNexis.
The clearest adoption signal came from Freshfields. The Magic Circle firm rolled Claude out across 33 offices and saw internal usage rise 500% in six weeks. That matters because legal work changes slowly, and lawyers will not keep a tool unless it helps with document comprehension, defined terms, exhibits, schedules and defensible output.
Anthropic is also turning potential legal AI rivals into ecosystem partners. Harvey and Legora remain front-end products, but Claude becomes a foundation layer they can build on or connect to. The legal AI market is moving from polished assistants toward platforms with data access, workflow hooks and authoritative grounding.
